Laila is a wheelchair bound teenagerwith cerebral palsy. She is a student at DelhiUniversity and an aspiring writer who writeslyrics and creates electronic sounds for an indieband at the university. Laila falls for the leadsinger of the college band and is heartbrokenwhen she is rejected. But she soon overcomesthis phase, when she gets a scholarship for asemester at New York University and movesthere with her mother. Living in Manhattan, shemeets an attractive young man named Jared inher creative writing class, who is assigned tohelp her in typing. She also meets the fieryyoung activist Khanum, a blind girl of a Pakistaniand Bangladeshi descent, whom she later falls inlove with.
